EMMA Extension pilot cruise and potential for IWT discussed thoroughly in the Polish media

The first commercial container transport on the Vistula River received wide media attention. The program Samorządni in TVP Bydgoszcz and programme Eko-opcja in TVP 3 Bydgoszcz discussed thoroughly the pilot container cruise on the Lower Vistula River and the potential for inland navigation (read more about the pilot here). In total, about 200 posts, articles and films on this topic were published on the internet and several articles in the local and regional press.

The guests of the Samorządni program in TVP Bydgoszcz on the 12th of April were Sławomir Kopyść - Member of the Board of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region, Przemysław Daca - President of Polish Waters, Roman Rogalski - President of the Vistula Employers' Association “Leviatan”, Dr. Joanna Borowiak - Member of the Polish Parliament (Parliamentary Team for the Lower Vistula Cascade) and Dr. Michał Habel - professor at the Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz. They answered the questions related to the development plan for inland water transport and whether the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Region can benefit from it. In addition to the conclusions drawn from the conducted cruise, the potential and the issue of building a water barrage in Siarzewo and the Bydgoszcz Logistics Hub (Bydgoszcz-Solec Kujawski multimodal platform and Bydgoszcz Emilianowo intermodal terminal) were discussed.

It was pointed out that the cruise showed the possibility of carrying out such projects in future and the interest of companies in this type of transport, mainly due to its cheaper and “green dimension”. Nevertheless, removing bottlenecks, such as the lack of transshipment and port infrastructure, should be taken care of as well as the proper technical condition of the river, ensuring its appropriate depth, to increase the number of such activities.
